WALK to End Hydrocephalus

Updated: Sep 29

Supporting miracle kids, walking for a purpose

Tessa Wright, Public Relations Staff

On Sept. 20, USCDM participated in South Carolina’s WALK to End Hydrocephalus. The walk is organized by the Hydrocephalus Association, and put on annually in cities across the U.S. This event is the organization's largest fundraising event: proceeds fund critical research, advocacy, education and support for the foundation.

Hydrocephalus is a condition close to Dance Marathons' heart. Hydrocephalus occurs in one of every 1,000 babies born in the US. The neurological condition is caused by the buildup of fluid in the brain. The fluid builds pressure, eventually causing brain damage. The condition is most common in infants and older adults.

But beyond just raising money, the Walk brings together our community by spreading awareness and encouraging connections between those impacted by the condition.

For Emma Caulder, a miracle kid, participating in the Hydrocephalus Walk is about more than just supporting a good cause. When Emma was just 9 months old, she was diagnosed with 4th ventricular obstructive hydrocephalus. Since then, she has undergone 18 surgeries to help the buildup of fluid in her brain. Emma is incredibly active in the Hydrocephalus community and is involved in the Columbia Hydrocephalus Association and the Hydrocephalus Walk for SC. Emma was involved in planning the event and participated in the support group.

“Helping plan and put on the walk meant that I could voice what I went through in my everyday life living with this condition," Caulder said. “Knowing that most people don’t even know what it is and a headache could mean one thing to them and another thing to me. Just being able to support others with the same condition as me but also getting the word out to get more awareness is why I help put on the walk every year."

It’s miracle kids like Emma who strengthen USCDM’s connection to the families we serve and the causes we represent. By being present, USCDM had the chance to stand alongside the families impacted by the condition and directly support one of the many causes of our pediatric health community here in Columbia. Children are our future, and supporting them in moments like this ensures that future is brighter, stronger and filled with hope. Together, we are Building Brighter Days!
